Student Safety

Holy Spirit Catholic School is committed to providing our student with a safe environment while attending school.  Faculty, staff, and visitors are required to wear name badges so that students know they are school-approved.  All employees of the Diocese of Biose are required to have a criminal background check and to attend a “Sexual Misconduct” Workshop.

 GENERAL RULES OF CONDUCT

The children of Holy Spirit Catholic School are expected to conduct themselves in a positive manner.  Each student is expected to display respect for body, mind, and conduct; they should show respect for classmates, teachers, and all other people at Holy Spirit Catholic School.  They must have respect for the properties of the school, classmates, and teachers.  Each Holy Spirit Catholic School student is also expected to conduct themselves in a safe and courteous manner including respect for adult authority.  Each student should strive for a spirit of fair play and justice treating others as they would like to be treated.  

  1. Inappropriate items such as toys, Game Boys, PSP’s, etc., which distract the student from their work are not allowed and will be forfeited if found with the child
  2. Making and throwing snowballs is forbidden on the school grounds.
  3. Rocks and sand are not be picked-up or thrown on school grounds.
  4. The use of the gym by our students is restricted to physical education classes and special school functions under proper supervision.
  5. Ball thrown or kicked on the school roof are to be retrieved only by the custodian
  6. Students are to be quiet when walking in the halls
  7. Students are required to stay on the school campus during school hours, unless accompanied by a parent.
  8. Weapons are prohibited on school grounds.  Any student found with a gun, switchblade knife, or any other weapon whose sole purpose is to inflict bodily harm will be suspended from Holy Spirit Catholic School in accordance with federal law.
  9. Tobacco and alcohol products are illegal for minors to possess and any infraction by a Holy Spirit Catholic School student will be turned over to the local law enforcement.  All students will participate in the D.A.R.E Program.

 

DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

 

The faculty and staff of Holy Spirit Catholic School believe that students are happier and learn better if they are in an atmosphere of caring and courtesy.  We believe that this courtesy must be reflected not only by staff members, but also by the students themselves.  The faculty and staff have devised a set of rules and procedures to teach good behavior and citizenship to our students as follows:

 

MINOR DISCIPLINE SLIPS – Behaviors listed below which are deemed as minor discipline problems will be handled with the issuance of minor discipline slips.  These behaviors can turn into major discipline problems if the behaviors are repeated.

 •    Misuse of cafeteria

•    Not leaving the cafeteria by the backdoor

•    Yelling in the cafeteria

•    Crowding in the lunch line

•    Not taking care of lunch trays properly

•    Not following school rules in the building

•    Not practicing safety on the playground

•    Climbing on high things

•    Misuse of playground equipment

•    Not playing in designated areas

•    Disturbing classrooms

•    Running in the school/church building

•    Abusing bathrooms

•    Being in building without permission

•    Physical contact during play

•    Sliding on feet during snow

•    Ignoring whistles and bells

•    Not staying seated while on the bus

•    Not keeping hands or head inside the bus

•    Misusing windows on the bus

•    Spitting

•    Not using indoor voices while on the bus

•    Inappropriate language

•    Not using crosswalks

•    Abusing bus

•    Ignoring bus driver’s requests

•    Disrespect of people and/or their property

 

MAJOR DISCIPLINE SLIPS

Major discipline slips will be issued to students whose behaviors warrant immediate action.  These discipline slips will be turned into the student’s teacher who will be responsible for keeping a record of the discipline slips issued each student.  If a student receives two (2) discipline slips for a major discipline problems, his/her parent(s) will be called and for each ticket thereafter.  If a student receives five (5) major discipline slips for major discipline problems, it is a major problem and the student will be referred to the principal.  The following disciplinary actions, not in sequence may be taken by the teacher and/or principal: guidance and counseling by a staff member; conference with parent, teacher, and principal; detention, reports, school clean-up; restriction of activities; suspension and/or expulsion.  The following acts would constitute a major discipline problem:

 

•    Leaving the school grounds without permission

•    Harassment of others

•    Willful disobedience

•    Disrespect of faculty/staff

•    Disruption of school by depriving others through violence, force, noise, threat, passive means

•    Throwing snowballs or rocks

•    Extortion by force or threat

•    Intimidation with threat of bodily harm

•    Hazing by mental or physical abuse

•    Damage of property

•    Stealing

•    Physical injury

•    Fighting (physical altercation)

•    Cursing, profanity, vulgar language

•    Insubordination – failing to comply

•    Weapons

•    Intoxicants

•    Conduct the interferes with education programs

•    Any action committed on school grounds that violates the Idaho Criminal Code

 

With parents and faculty/staff working together as a team, our students’ education will reflect excellence.  It is our policy that students be held accountable for their own actions.  If a student demonstrates inappropriate behavior, he/she us dealt with fairly and according to our school discipline plan.  We involve and inform parents when these occurrences arise.  It is our belief that children of informed parents experience little misbehavior.  Together, we can keep Holy Spirit Catholic School a place where learning and growing can occur in a quality environment.
