NAN-O-GRAM

Just a reminder…

Now that the weather has definitely turned cooler, please remember that our ‘uniform swap’ runs informally throughout the school year.  During Literacy Night in November, all the uniforms will be displayed for you in the school hall, as they were during ‘Back to School’ night.

But for now, we have a plethora…one of my favorite words…of uniforms, especially khaki pants!  We have all sizes available for both boys and girls, in several styles, and in great condition.  If you don’t have anything to swap, that’s okay.  I encourage you to just come by and pick out what you need.

Keep reading to your kids!

FREE & REDUCED LUNCH DEADLINE

Applications for free or reduced lunch were due today!  Anyone who has not turned in a new application for this year will begin being charged the full rate for lunch ($2.00) beginning Monday, Oct. 1.  All applications are kept confidential.

Included with today’s newsletter is the Hot Lunch Menu for October.  Parents, please note that milk tickets can be purchased in bulk just like hot lunch.  All you need to do is indicate that the money is for milk and the computer does the rest.  So much easier than scrambling for those quarters every morning!

ICE BLOCKING

Thank you to Marcy Pearhill and everyone else who helped make our afternoon of Ice Blocking such a great success!  The weather was great, the parents were fun and the kids were awesome!

REQUIRED FORMS NEEDED!

If you received a notice last week that we were missing some of your forms and you have not returned them, please do so now.  Thank you!

NO SCHOOL

Next Thursday and Friday, Oct. 4 and 5, both child care and school will be closed.  The faculty will be doing Statewide In-service activities and the child care staff will be attending classes for their continued licensing.

Make sure to mark your calendars!!

SCHOOL SWEATSHIRTS

Finally, we have received prices for our Holy Spirit Catholic School logo shirts for this year.  Attached to today’s newsletter is an order form and price listing.              New this year is your choice of color - red, white, black or gray, on any of the items plus we have added a zip-up sweatshirt.   During the cold winter months sweatshirts can be worn as part of the school uniform.  If your child chooses to wear the zip up style of sweatshirt, they still must have a uniform shirt on underneath.  Tee shirts will only be able to be worn on Spirit Day.

Orders and payment will be accepted through October 10.

Altar Server Training

There will be an Altar Server Training session on Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in St. Anthony Chapel.  All baptized Catholic boys or girls who have received their First Communion are eligible to be altar servers. This training is not only for those who have never served, but also for those who need a refresher course.

RECYCLED PAPER

Have you noticed weird stuff on the back of your student’s homework papers or on papers going home from the school office?  Well in order to help save a tree and to keep our costs down, we use “used” one sided paper for such things.  If you see something on one side that doesn’t make sense rest assured you can probably ignore it.  This paper is donated and we try to make sure that the content on the one side is “clean” but once in a while we do slip up and something gets by us, so accept our apologies in advance.  Also, if you have one side paper that you would like to donate, please drop it off in the school office.

TESTING BEGINS

Beginning next Tuesday, Oct. 2, students in grades 2-6 will begin M.A.P. testing.  This is the same type of test as the ISAT’s, just a different name and provider.  Please make sure your student gets plenty of rest and a good breakfast so that their brains are awake and thinking!!!

STRANGER DANGER

Kindergarten through 6th grade students walked down to the City of Pocatello Police Department yesterday for a Stranger Danger presentation.  Check with them to see what they learned and help reinforce it to help keep all our little darlings safe!

THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND

Are you new to the Holy Spirit Catholic Community?  There will be a new comers gathering at St. Paul’s Chapel on Chubbuck Road from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on October 7th.  This gathering sponsored by the Befriended Ministry.  Please come with your families and meet and greet new and current members of the parish.

ONGOING STUFF

  • Holy Spirit Catholic School Raffle tickets will continue to be sold through Oct. 1.
  • Collection of Yoplait Yogurt Pink lids will continue through October.  Please support this cause for those special “ladies” in your life.
  • Collection of canned and boxed food for the Stone Soup Drive will continue through October 15.  According to our sources, the food banks are running extremely low, so please help if you can.
  • Albertson’s Community Partners – Did you remember to get signed up for this program? Completed forms can be turned into the school office and we will register for you.  Remember it makes money for the school without costing you anything extra!
  • For all you Smith’s shoppers, make sure you get signed up for their Earn & Learn program.  Once again the school receives money whenever you shop at the store and use your card.

TRAFFIC ON 7TH STREET

Don’t forget to sign the petition in the school hallway regarding the traffic on 7th.  We would love to get a four way stop at 7th and Wyeth as well as a crosswalk in front of the school and you know, the squeaky wheel gets fixed first (or something like that!).

Helpful Hints to Help Your Child Learn

Set up daily routines.  Consider the routines below to make your child feel more…………..

  • RELAXED.  Music can help your child avoid the morning rush.  Play a soothing tape and ask him to be dressed and ready by the time it’s over.
  • ENERGIZED.  A good breakfast increases concentration.  Offer your youngster healthy choices: a whole-wheat bagel w/peanut butter; orange juice blended w/fruit and yogurt; instant oatmeal.
  • CONNECTED.  Talking about the school day lets your child know you care.  Ask him to share two good things that happened during the day.  Prompt him with specific questions, such as “Which multiplications tables did you practice?”
  • PREPARED.  Studying a little every day is the best way to learn new material.  Help your youngster choose a time for homework when his is most alert – and try not to change it.
  • RESTED.  A set bedtime helps kids fall asleep more quickly.  Suggest that your child get in bed 15 minutes early to read, make up stories, or talk quietly with you.                                                         Taken from Home & School Connection
