NAN-O-GRAM

Auction preparations are progressing very smoothly, and I thank all of you for your diligence in getting your items in for Dawn and her crew. They have been working feverishly to organize and record the fantastically eclectic collection of donations. I remind you that the deadline for bringing in items is tomorrow as the catalog is going to the printer this weekend. However, there is still time for you to volunteer to help in several capacities (see attachment), and your talents would be highly appreciated by all of us.

Our fifth grade class won the contest for the highest percentage of items brought in by the January 11th deadline and will be uniform free for an entire week of their choice. The third graders were second, and will be treated to one day of free dress. Were they excited…just ask one of them!

I am so looking forward to our auction! It has always been one of my favorite events of the year bringing us together for easy conversation, great food and lots of good cheer.

Thank you all so very much!

                        Keep reading to your kids!

SCHOOL & CHILD CARE CLOSED

Don’t forget that the school and child care will be closed next Monday, Jan. 21 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  We hope you take this opportunity to visit with your child about acceptance of diversity.  Ask your child about “Mix It Up” lunch day.

IMPORTANT DATE CHANGES

The week of Jan. 27 – Feb. 2 is National Catholic School’s Week.  We will be celebrating this week with lots of fun activities:  decorating the school’s windows, bring a “special” person to lunch day, a bake sale, plus other “Spirit Week” activities, and of course the dinner auction for the adults!  Make sure you watch for next week’s newsletter to join in the fun.

Unfortunately, the priests are going to be in Boise that week, but Father Ben has made arrangements to come back early and have Mass with the students on Friday.  So they will not have Mass on Thursday, Jan. 31.  The students will need to wear their uniform on Friday!!!

Then the next week, the students will be attending Mass on Wednesday, Feb. 6, to celebrate Ash Wednesday, which begins the season of Lent.

Please mark your calendar for these changes.

ALL SCHOOL MASS

To begin National Catholic School’s Week, the students will be presenting the Sunday Mass at 10:00 a.m. on January 27, at St. Anthony’s Chapel.  If your child would like to be involved, please have them check with Mrs. Gabiola as soon as possible.

Thanks!

LAST CHANCE!!!

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING SESSION

Attention anyone who has not attended a S.E.T. session and wants to be involved at the school, i.e., class parties, field trips, volunteering.  We have scheduled a training session for Thursday, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the basement of Holy Spirit Catholic Chapel.  Please mark your calendars now and plan on attending as this may be the last training session offered this school year!!!!

Student Council News

Student Council would like to report that $37.00 was collected from the raffle of the stereo system last month. The winner was Charley McRoberts, and congratulations to her! The proceeds have been put towards the new mat for the front door.

Student Council members will meet tomorrow morning to decide on the activities for Spirit Week to help celebrate National Catholic Schools Week at the end of this month.  Hannah Quick will announce the plans at the Hall Meeting on Tuesday morning, January 22nd.

Operation Wishbook

The Southeast Idaho Reading Council would like to express sincere gratitude to all of those who donated to Operation Wishbook again this year. Over 1,200 new books were donated and distributed through the Salvation Army to 500 families in the Pocatello/Chubbuck area.  Holy Spirit Catholic School donated over 400 of those books!

In addition to the hundreds of new books, approximately 700 used books were also donated. These books were given to Bannock House and Aide for Friends.  All recipients were extremely grateful.

Being involved in the distribution of the books through the Salvation Army is always a rewarding experience. It is so heartwarming to see parents carefully choosing that “special book” for each child. Many are looking for a specific author or series their child loves to read, or for books they loved as children. The Harry Potter and Junie B Jones series were very popular this year.

Thank you for your generosity and support of this project. By giving a child a book to call its own at Christmas you have given a gift that can be opened again and again!

INCREASED HOT LUNCH FEES

Please remember when you’re paying for hot lunch that it now costs $2.25 for hot lunch with milk and milk only is .50 cents.

FREE THROW CONTESTS

Saturday, Jan. 19 is “contest day” for both boys and girls ages 8-14 who like to shoot “free throws.”  Beginning at 12:00 p.m. the local Elks Club will be holding their contest in Reed Gym on the ISU campus.  Please pre-register with Joe Richmond at 234-1873.  Then the Knights of Columbus will have their contest beginning at 2:00 p.m. and going until 5:00 in the school gym.  Pre-registration is not necessary for this contest but you can contact Kerry Hennessy @ 317-0222 with any questions.

Both contests are FREE to participate in and are national competitions.  So step on up to the line!!

PALMS

Once again we will be collecting Palms to be burned for this year’s distribution on Ash Wednesday.  If you still have your palms please send them in with your child to be given to their teacher.  Thanks!

MID TERMS GO HOME

Students in grades 4-6 received their mid term grades this week, did you get yours?

BABY, IT’S COLD OUT THERE!!

Parents, please make sure that your child has appropriate outdoor clothing for these cold, cold days – hats, mittens, coats!  We don’t send the kids out for very long, but in these frigid temperatures they need to be bundled up!

PARENTING CLASS

It’s a crazy world out there and parenting can be so difficult, but there is help available.  The Portneuf Valley Family Center & Portneuf District Library is presenting a “Parenting with Love and Logic Course.”  We have attached a flyer with all the details regarding this course for those who are interested.
